MELK is pleased to announce the opening of Still Movement, Katinka Goldberg’s first solo- show in Norway.

Still movement is a series of portraits comprised of bodies in motion. As these photographed bodies are enveloped in a white sheet, a sense of intimacy is made manifest. By overexposing the images, and thereby abstracting the body, Goldberg removes part of the narrative, thus opening the space up for a myriad of readings. The images represent an introverted condition akin to the feeling of disappearing. The artist seeks to create a sense of enclosure, a demarcated space, which nonetheless is exposed given the viewers position as observer.

The symbolic tension in the work is made explicit through the choice of mounting. The use of light-boxes enhances the overexposed and abstract qualities of the work. The images, though lacking in apparent drama, nonetheless hint at an underlying and uncomfortably claustrophobic silence.

Katinka Goldberg (b. 1981) was born in Stockholm, and has spent the last year living and working in Oslo. She has studied in Sweden, France, and received her BA (HONS) at Edinburgh College of Art. Her work has been exhibited in Japan, Great Britain, Sweden, and the Photo Festival at Arles in France in 2007. She has among other things, assisted J.H. Engstrøm.

In march of 2011 her first book of photographs, See You will be released, by the renowned swedish photo-publishing house, Journal.

Still Movement is the fifth exhibition at MELK, in a series showcasing young scandinavian photographers.

MELK har gleden av å presentere Katinka Goldbergs første separatutstilling i Norge under tittelen Still Movement.

Still Movement består av en serie intime portretter av kropp i bevegelse omgitt av hvitt laken. Ved å overeksponere fotografiene og dermed abstrahere kroppen fjerner Goldberg deler av det narrative og skaper rom for tolkning. Bildene illustrerer en introvert tilstand med en følelse av å nesten forsvinne. Intensjonen til kunstneren er å skape en følelse av et innesluttet rom, en avgrenset plass. Dog eksponert ettersom betrakteren kan se inn og observere.

Symbolikken fremheves ved fotografienes montering i lysbokser som forsterker det lyse, abstrakte utrykket. Bildene er tilsynelatende udramatiske med en underliggende ubehagelig klaustrofobisk stillhet.

Katinka Goldberg (f. 1981) er født i Stockholm og har det siste året bodd og arbeidet i Oslo. Hun har sin utdannelse fra Sverige, Frankrike og mottok i 2008 BA (HONS) i fotografi ved Edinburgh College of Art. Goldberg har stilt ut i Japan, Storbritannia, Sverige og Frankrike ved fotofestivalen i Arles i 2007. Hun har tidligere assistert blant annet J.H. Engström.

I mars 2011 lanseres Goldbergs første fotobok See You under det anerkjente fotobokforlaget Journal i Sverige.

Still Movement er den femte i en serie utstillinger på MELK med fokus på ung, skandinavisk fotografi.
