Marius Ektvedt - National Park at MELK 2010

January 7 – February 7 2010

MELK starts off the New Year with the exhibition National Park. This show, by Norwegian artist Marius Ektvedt, is comprised of new work produced for MELK in the fall of 2009.

The photographs that make up National Park revolve around an encounter with a natural world, which for Ektvedt is defined as both unassailable and indifferent.
Ektvedts portraits of his immediate family can be read as a reaction to this confrontation with an apparently complete and self-sufficient nature. The need to regain control, or leverage, is here made manifest as the photographer himself assumes the role of the unassailable one. This is done by placing the subjects in uncomfortable and awkward positions, subsequently photographing them in obviously strained poses from above.

As a contrast to the encounter with nature, indifference is now replaced by a desire for mutual recognition. This becomes impossible, given that the photographer consciously does not mirror his subject’s wishes. When we are told that Ektvedt has cast someone to play his ‘father’, the display of domination evident in his method is disputed, intimating a certain lack within the work itself.

“He needs to get out, hop a bus to the forest, and walk. Break off a branch, carry it home, place it on the couch. Out once more, fill a bag with moss, cover the walls and ceiling with soft moss. This forest growing inside the apartment, breathes and leaves the windows dewy.”
