MELK is proud to present Johan Rosenmunthe with the solo-exhibition titled Silent Counts.

In Silent Counts the Danish artist Johan Rosenmunthe examines stones as tactile objects through different angles, compositions and instruments. By exploring stones from a geological perspective he illustrates that they materially denote weight, surface, dust and age. Yet by recording them via the medium of photography he adds a nostalgic, scientific and philosophical reading of the stones, which challenges their bodily essence.

Silent Counts aims to underline that stones are hard, brutal and ruthless, while they have an peculiar romantic aura of transcendence and time. They are dead, yet visually in motion. By emphasizing these characteristics Rosenmunthe seeks an aesthetic relation between the objects depicted and the body of the spectator, which confuses the ordinary reading of natural materials as empty and still.

Consequently Rosenmunthe connects conceptual photography with a sophisticated formal approach. The formalistic language is partly reflected in the spatial works in Silent Counts, where glass, wood, time and the colour blue becomes essential. By working with a transition between sculpture, photography, and installation Rosenmunthe creates a space where a phenomenological experience becomes central.

This is the first time Silent Counts is displayed in its entirety, and the exhibition coincides with the forthcoming publication of Johan Rosenmunthe’s book with the same title. It is the first exhibition by the artist in Norway.

Johan Rosenmunthe (b.1982) is educated from Fatamorgana Academy of Art Photography (2005) and has been exhibited in cities like Copenhagen, Paris, Reykjavik, Malmö, Kaliningrad, Mölnn and Guatemala City. He is nominated for the Paul Huf Award 2013, and has two monographic publications behind him – currently working on the third. In 2010 he co-founded exhibition platform and publishing house Lodret Vandret, where he curates and edits exhibitions and publications. Rosenmunthe works primarily in Copenhagen.

The exhibition is supported by the Arts Council Norway, Danish Art Agency and Norwegian Photographic Fund.
